Pocomoke plans Christmas events throughout December

By Greg Ellison, Staff Writer

(Nov. 30, 2017) Christmas cheer will abound in Pocomoke throughout December, starting with the 7th annual Mayor’s Old Fashioned Christmas Evening on Friday from 5:30-8:30 p.m.

Mayor Bruce Morrison, who started the tradition during his first year in office, described the event as a fun-filled night intended to draw people out of their houses.

“This is one time a year I’m able to give back to the citizens of Pocomoke,” he said.

Traditional holiday activities, such as horse-drawn carriage rides, are provided at no cost in the mini park and municipal parking lot on Clarke Avenue across from City Hall.

The night will become fully illuminated at 6 p.m. when Morrison lights the town’s Christmas tree while Frank Henry serenades the crowd with “The Sprit of Christmas.”

Live entertainment is scheduled throughout the evening, staring with the Salem United Methodist Church’s Salem Brass group. Also slated are performances by the All About Dance Academy, plus the Pocomoke Middle and High School choirs will fill the air with angelic sounds.

The Mar-Va Theater will stage a sneak preview of “A Charlie Brown Christmas,” which begins a weekend run at the theater on Dec. 8.

Children can delight in decorating tree ornaments and cookies. Santa’s House will open its doors for pictures with Mr. and Mrs. Claus. The pair will reopen their residence on Saturday Dec. 9 and 16 from 12-2 p.m. Parents can bring their own cameras to take pictures at no cost.

Family members can cozy up and warm their bones by a bonfire while roasting s’mores.

Sip and snack on free hot chocolate, hot cider, hot dogs, sweet treats and other items from community vendors.

Adults of legal drinking age can indulge in wine tastings from Layton’s Chance Winery and sample choice suds from Evolution Craft Brewing Co.

The evening also provides an opportunity to support area churches and nonprofits. While admission is free, vendors often request minimal donations to support their organizations.

The Samaritan Shelter will hold a food drive and attendees are encouraged to donate caned goods, nonperishable food times or paper products.

There will be a holiday wreath contest and silent auction to benefit the Mar-Va Theater. Place your bid on numerous wreaths decorated by Pocomoke residents and businesses.

The homemade chili cook-off starts at 6:30 p.m., with proceeds from cash donations supporting the Pocomoke Volunteer Fire Company Auxiliary. The public has until 7:30 p.m. to vote on samples from area residents and businesses.

Prizes for the holiday wreath contest and chili cook-off will be awarded onstage at 8 p.m. to the top three individuals and businesses in each competition.

Information and registration forms for both contests can be found online at www.downtownpocomoke.com.
