(Jan. 14,2021) John Dale Smack, Jr., 86, of Berlin, departed this life on Wednesday, Jan. 6, 2021, at TidalHealth Peninsula Regional in Salisbury.

Born in Berlin, he was the son of the late John Dale Smack, Sr. and Rosie Henry Smack.

The Town of Berlin’s first Black council member, Mr. Smack served the town from 1980-1988. A veteran of the United States Air Force, he was a bus contractor for 52 years.

He was a member of St. Paul United Methodist Church, in Berlin, where he served as a member of the United Methodist Men and Men’s Ministry and past trustee.

He was also a member of the American Legion Duncan Showell Post No. 231, Lily of the Valley Eastern Star No. 47, SHORE UP! Inc., and Board of Directors of the Berlin Heritage Foundation Inc.

He was a former member of the Booker T. Washington Lodge No. 87 F. & A.M. and past detachment commander of the Sons of the American Legion.

Loving memories will be cherished by: his wife, Leola Smack; a son, John Dale Smack III (Sheryl); a daughter, Velda Henry (Patrick); four grandchildren, one niece, several cousins, other relatives, in-laws and friends.

In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by a son, Kevin L. Smack.

Mr. Smack will lie in repose on Saturday, Jan. 16, 2021, from 10 a.m. to noon at First Baptist Church Family Life & Cultural Center, 528 Booth Street, Salisbury. The funeral service will begin at noon. Rev. Peggy Briggs will officiate.

Interment will follow at St. Paul’s Cemetery, 10543 Assateague Road, Berlin. If you wish to sign the guestbook, please do so online.
