Groups partner to offer vets free medical transportation

LOWER SHORE–Nearly 19,000 veterans call the Lower Eastern Shore home. One of the challenges facing veterans in our rural community is a lack of easily accessible and affordable transportation to and from services offered at the Cambridge VA Outpatient Clinic. To help veterans overcome their transportation challenges, United Way of the Lower Eastern Shore and Delmarva Community Services have partnered to offer free medical transportation.
The Veterans Travel Assistance Program provides free transportation for Lower Shore veterans who are facing financial difficulties and are in need of transportation to and from medical appointments.
“The transport program allows veterans to remain independent and receive the medical services that they need and deserve,” said Mobility Manager, Mary Handley of Delmarva Community Services.
With the support of United Way, Delmarva Community Services was able to provide over 600 trips this past year for local veterans in need of medical transportation. Mary Handley is thankful for the continued United Way partnership.
“It would be impossible to get our veterans to their health appointments without support from the United Way,” said Handley. “Without the assistance, we would have to turn many of our participating veterans away.”
