Berlin Parks Commission Briefs

By Ally Lanasa, Staff Writer

(March 11, 2021) The following took place during the Berlin Parks Commission meeting on March 2:

Mary Bohlen

Commemorative program

The commission agreed to submit the final draft of the commemorative program to the Berlin mayor and Town Council. Through the program, individuals or organizations can memorialize a person or event at the parks. However, with the town entering its budget season, Deputy Town Administrator Mary Bohlen said she plans to present the draft after the start of the fiscal year.

2021 events

As a result of the pandemic, no events are planned, Bohlen said.

“The chamber of commerce, for instance, will not be holding its traditional spring celebration event as they have done in the past,” she said. “So, we will not be doing a craft that day.”

Crafts were ordered last year before the start of the pandemic, so Bohlen suggested coordinating with Ivy Wells, the town’s economic and community development director, to have them in the foyer of the Berlin Welcome Center on South Main Street for children to grab and go.

Normally, the town celebrates Take Pride in Berlin Week and Cleanup Day in April, but the events have been canceled for the second consecutive year because of covid-19.

At this stage, National Night Out remains a possibility for August.

Upcoming meetings

The parks commission is scheduled to meet the first Tuesday of every other month at 5:30 p.m. Meetings are planned for May 4, July 6, Sept. 7 and Nov. 2.
