Berlin HDC approves sign requests

Members of the Berlin Historic District Commission approve several signs for downtown businesses during a meeting last week at Town Hall.

(Aug. 15, 2019) The Berlin Historic District Commission approved several sign requests during a meeting last Wednesday:

  • Beach Memories Jewelry

A specialty gift shop on 106 N. Main St. asked to hang a sign under a metal awning, which Berlin’s Historic District Commission unanimously approved.

Commission member Laura Stearns said she appreciated the sign’s 31-inch  circular shape.

“It’s something different,” Commission member Laura Stearns said.

Beach Memories Jewelry has sand inside its glass jewelry products, according to glass artist Michelle Krempa. The studio will also hold classes.

“We’re excited to be here,” Krempa said. “I think it’s the perfect location for us.”

Commission member Norman Bunting moved to approve the sign, and Vice-Chairman Robert Poli, DMD seconded it

  • Dreamweaver

Representatives from Dreamweaver, a free trade shop on 4 S. Main St., asked the commission to allow the store to showcase a 4-foot by four-foot painted sign with a wooden frame on the side of the building facing Jefferson Street.

Stearns moved to approve the request. The vote was unanimous.

  • J&M Meat Market and Grille

Heidi Johnson, of J&M Meat Market addressed members of the town’s historic district commission to update the sign to change the name to J&M Meat Market and Grille, according to the proposal.

The property is located on 101 William Street in downtown Berlin.

“She’s done such a nice job, it looks beautiful,” Stearns said.

Poli moved to approve the sign change, which Bunting seconded. The vote was unanimous.

  • Life’s Simple Pleasures

Members of Berlin’s Historic District Committee unanimously approved a sign for Life’s Simple Pleasures new location on 10 S. Main St. in Berlin.

Owner Brenda Malone requested having a 42-inch by 32-inch hanging wood sign and a 4-foot by 1.5-foot freestanding sign made of wood and chalkboard, according to the proposal.

“You’ve got a great location,” Chairwoman Carol Rose said.

Stearns moved to approve the sign, which Poli seconded.

  • Viking Tree Trading Company

Viking Tree Trading Company’s newly approved sign will have a vintage feel after receiving a nod from Berlin’s Historic District Commission.

Painted lettering will adorn the brick walls of the store located on 114 S. Main St., according to owner Bryan Brushmiller.

“It makes me feel like I’m back in the 1800s,” Poli said.

Bunting moved to approve Brushmiller’s request, which Poli seconded. The vote was unanimous.

Commission member Mary Moore was absent from last Wednesday’s meeting.
