Berlin Fire Co. going after cornhole toss world record

BERLIN—The Berlin Fire Company, long known for its breakfast fundraisers, will add something new this year, a Cornhole Toss Tournament on March 29 that will offer contestants the opportunity to try to break an official Guinness World Record.
The day-long event will begin at 11:30 a.m. at the Berlin Fire Company, located at 214 North Main St.
The cost for admission is $10 and includes all-you-can-eat of the hot dogs and hamburgers that will be served during the day. Entry is for individuals at least 18 years old.
For an additional $5 fee, attendees 21 years old and older can purchase beer mugs with the Berlin Fire Company logo and a day-long supply of cold brews, Fitzgerald said.  There will be a cash bar for liquor and wine.
A DJ will provide entertainment throughout the day. There will also be a 50/50 raffle.
The team pre-registration fee for the tournament is $40 until March 22. Team registration on the day of the tournament will be $50, according to the fire company and will include four free beer tickets and all you-can-eat food for the day.
The current cornhole board toss record was set when American Aaron Burris launched a bean bag 106 feet through a cornhole board in East Glenn, Ind., on Oct. 30, 2010, according to the Guinness World Records webpage. It took him 54 shots to achieve the official record, it said.
The Berlin Fire Company has been supplied with the criteria to officially certify the results of individual contestants’ attempts to break Burris’s record at the cornhole toss game, which is played similar to a horseshoe toss, Fire Company President David Fitzgerald said.
The contestants will be vying for a set of official cornhole toss boards, valued at more than $300, the company said. The boards will be able to be customized, according to the organizers. The contest will cost $5 for three attempts to toss a bean bag through a hole on one of the BFC’s official cornhole boards.
The fire company will also host a double-elimination-style tournament team competition of the popular game, which Fitzgerald said would be open to a wide range of age groups. “We thought it would be something fun and different for fundraising,” which he added will also be a fun event for the spectators.
The tournament is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. and will continue until a winner is declared. There will be cash prizes for first, second and third place, Fitzgerald said. The size of the prizes will be commensurate with the number of teams participating, he said.
The event will coincide with the Town of Berlin’s celebration of its designation as Budget Travel’s “America’s Coolest Small Town 2014.”
