Rex Wayne Hailey

Mayor Rex Wayne Hailey, age 70, passed on to a better place on Friday, Sept. 1, 2017 at the Harrison House Nursing and Rehab Center in Snow Hill. Born in Baltimore, he was the son of the late Rex and Nancy Adkins Hailey. He is survived by his beloved wife of 34 years, Shirley Chenoweth Hailey, a.k.a. “Shirley Toms,” and children, Amanda Pennewell of Berlin and Jeremy Pennewell of Edgewater, New Jersey. He was an adored grandfather to Brooks and Liam McCready. Preceding him in death were two sisters, Doris Oliver and Lillian McCoy, and his pug, Cheswick. Also surviving are two nieces, Nancy and Susan, and sister-niece Linda, four nephews, four step-children, and their adopted Turkish family. Rex graduated from Patterson High School, and University of Baltimore. While living in Baltimore he had been the curator of the Edgar Allen Poe Museum in Baltimore. Brett Hill to hold town hall in OPA Thursday, June 1

(June 1, 2017) Acting General Manager Brett Hill announced he will hold a town hall meeting to provide updates on all of the capital projects and improvements the Ocean Pines Association has accomplished during the last several months. The meeting is set for 7 p.m. on Thursday, June 1 on the second floor of Mumford’s Landing in Ocean Pines, at 1 Mumford’s Landing Road. A brief presentation will outline past efforts and present opportunities for the public to comment. The public is encouraged to come with questions, concerns and ideas. Questions may be submitted in advance via email to info@oceanpines.org. Department directors of the Ocean Pines Association will join the acting general manager. Bishopville Julie Ann Suplee, age 47, of Bishopville, Maryland, passed peacefully on Wednesday, March 29, 2017 at Georgetown University after a 10-year battle with tRCC cancer. Born in Baltimore, Julie graduated from Landsdowne High School and Mount St. Mary’s College as an undergraduate with a dual-degree in Psychology and Art.   Her children were her life, and Julie left the workforce for 14 years to raise them before returning to her other passion, which was to help other’s children in education. Julie was also a founding member of Titanium Wrecks, NASA’s Worcester County Robotics Team for kids in Worcester. With the help of her leadership and guidance, the team thrived with an impressive three-year success in FRC Robotics. A beautifully-humored mother of four, she was an art therapist at the Howard T. Jean Gray Brittingham

Newark/Ocean View Jean Gray Brittingham, age 95, passed away on Tuesday, Oct. 18, 2016 at her home. Born in Newark, Maryland, she was the daughter of the late Neal and Elva Brittingham. She is survived by her nephews, Jim Sturgis, Samuel Sturgis and Bill Scott, and her beloved friend, Catharine “Kitty” McKee, of Ocean View, Delaware. She was preceded in death by her bother, Rudolph “Rudy” Brittingham. Ms. Brittingham was a 1938 graduate of Snow Hill High School and a graduate of the University of Delaware, Class of 1942. She had been a Home Economics teacher for 31 years at John M. Clayton High School in Dagsboro, Delaware. A graveside service was held on Saturday, Oct. 22, 2016 at Bowen Cemetery in Newark, Maryland. Robert Kendall Wilkins

Berlin Robert Kendall Wilkins, age 74, died Saturday, Oct. 22, 2016 at his home in Libertytown near Berlin. Born in Salisbury, he was the son of the late Alvin Wilkins and Gladys Wilkins. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Minnie Tubbs Wilkins. He is also survived by his children, Robert Wilkins of Berlin, Barbara Black and her husband, John, of Lynchburg, Virginia, and Sandra Dougan and her husband, James, of Bishopville, Maryland; nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Also surviving is a half-brother, Edward Evans, of Whaleyville. He was preceded in death by his half-brother, Richard Evans, in 2015. He was a graduate of Stephen Decatur High School Class of 1958 where he had been active in the Future Farmers of America. Mr. Wilkins had worked as an auto mechanic for many years. He was an Army veteran having served during the Korean War. He was a member of the Boggs-Disharoon American Legion Post #123 in Berlin, VFW and the Assateague Beach Buggy Association....

Berlin Mary Kathryn Merritt, ”Kitty,” age 75, went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Friday, Oct. 21, 2016. Born in Slab Fork, West Virginia, she was the daughter of the late Wesley and Ruth Cook Linthicum. She is survived by her children, Tammy Delaney, Terri Westcott, Mark Delaney and Tracy Delaney. She was an adored grandmother to four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Also surviving are her brothers, Rondy and Preston Linthicum. Kitty had been a care giver. Her kindness and generous spirit leaves a loving memory with her family and many dear friends. She will be greatly missed. A celebration of life will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Oct.  29, 2016 at Lighthouse Church of God. Friends may call one hour prior to the service. Ocean Pines Mary Margaret Stevens, age 77, passed away on Wednesday, Oct. 5, 2016, at Peninsula Regional Medical Center in Salisbury. Born in New Jersey, she was the daughter of the late Edward and Anna Cullen Hasson. She is survived by her husband of 54 years, David M. Stevens, and children, David G. Stevens and Jennifer L. Austin and her husband, Christopher. There are three grandchildren, Christopher, Nicholas and Blake. Also surviving are her brothers, Edward Hassan and his wife, Judy, William Hassan and his wife, Terry, and a sister, Anne Tyrpak, and her husband, Richard. Mrs. Stevens was a graduate of St. Joseph’s School of Nursing in Patterson New Jersey, received a B.S. degree in nursing from the University of Maryland and a Masters Degree from The Catholic University of America. Herbert John Schoellkopf, Jr., of Ocean City, known to most as Herb, and also as “the Old Pro,” passed away peacefully of natural causes, May 5, 2016 at age 95 surrounded by his family. He was a loving and well-loved family man, a hardworking businessman with great creativity and imagination, a very patriotic veteran, and a playful man who loved athletics, music, tropical travel, scuba diving, humor and dancing. Of his many sayings and mottos his standout advice to all was “work hard, play hard.” He was generous in many ways, and was especially supportive of organizations that serve those with disabilities. He was born in Camden, New Jersey on May 4, 1921 to Herbert John, Sr. and Helen Sturr Schoellkopf. As a child he lived through the Depression, in which his family was hit very hard. Edward Charles Stotz of Berlin, formerly of Rockville, Maryland, died April 30, 2016 surrounded by his loving family. He was 87 years old. He is survived by his wife, Dorothy O’Riley Stotz, who he married in 1992. Edward was predeceased by his first wife, Dorothy T. Stotz, of Rockville, Maryland, to whom he was married for 32 years. He was born in Montague City, Massachusetts to Edward and Florence (Huntoon) Stotz, and led a full and successful life. He was a star athlete at Turners Falls High School playing football, baseball and running track, having graduated in 1946. He attended Northfield Mount Hermon School in Gill, Massachusetts and played football at Syracuse University. He graduated from the University of Massachusetts in 1951, with a degree in electrical engineering. He served as a lieutenant in the United States Navy and had a successful career with Vitro Corporation where he worked on the Tomahawk Cruise Missile and the Gemini Space Program. Berlin Meghan Rebecca Hanle, of Berlin, Md., born June 14, 1983, passed away due to heart failure on Jan. 24, 2016 at the age of 32 at PRMC in Salisbury.   She is loved by and survived by her daughter, Madison Knox; parents, Gayle and John Hanle; step-father, John Harrison and boyfriend, Eric Knox.   She was an extremely kind and loving person that so enjoyed family, friends, the beach, saving pets, as well as interacting in social media and many other things.   A memorial service was held on Tuesday, Feb. 9, 2016 at Burbage Funeral Home in Berlin.
