Patricia Murray Chester Berlin Patricia Murray Chester, 77, died Oct. 4, 2014 in Berlin, Md. surrounded by her family. Born in Berlin, she was the daughter of the late Harry Earl Murray, Sr. and Virginia Dennis Murray.  She was preceded in death by her second husband, Marvel Lee Hadder in 1991, and N. William “Bill” Chester in 2012. She is survived by her children; Thomas S. Cropper, Jr. and his wife, Tina Pierce Cropper of Hebron; Virginia “Ginger” Jane C. Warren and her husband, James, of Berlin and Robert “Craig” (Big Bird) Cropper and his wife, Tammy Townsend Cropper of Powellville.   She was an adored grandmother to: Rebecca “Becky” Timmons and her husband Kevin; Brian Warren and his wife, Rachael; Thomas S. Ocean Pines–Mr. John Adam Nehmsmann, Sr., 90, of Ocean Pines, Md. passed away on Saturday, Sept. 20, 2014 at Atlantic General Hospital. Born Aug. 25, 1924 in Baltimore, he was the son of the late Elizabeth (Vogel) Nehmsmann and John W. Nehmsmann. He is survived by his loving wife, Margaret E.(Bette) Nehmsmann of 67 years. In addition to Margaret, John is also survived by three sons, Jack A. Jr. and his late wife, Ellen Nehmsmann (nee Fotia); loving partner Bonnie, Robert Jeffrey and his wife, Susan Nehmsmann, and Jay William and his wife, Chris Nehmsmann. He was a loving grandfather to Christine Benham and her husband, Michael. He was preceded in death by three sisters, Carolyn Lawrence, Mary Tatro and Dorothy Beierlein. John worked for Western Electric Company for 40 years after returning from England serving as a sergeant in the US Army during WWII. Val Jean Slowinski

Towson–Val Jean Slowinski, a retired Towson University professor who was active for more than two decades with the Cockpit in Court Theater in Essex, died Aug. 27 at Atlantic General Hospital in Berlin of a stroke. She was 78. The former Val Jean Sytko was born in Newark, N.J., and raised in Irvington, N.J., where she graduated in 1953 from Irvington High School. In 1957, she graduated from Kean University, formerly Newark State Teachers College, and later earned a master’s degree in speech pathology and audiology at what is now Loyola University Maryland. From 1973 to 1976, she was an adjunct professor in speech and public speaking at what is now the Community College of Baltimore County-Essex. In 1976, she joined the faculty of Towson University, where she taught communications until retiring in 1996. Ocean Pines–John “Jack” Francis O’Connor, age 82, died Tuesday, Sept. 16, 2014 at his home.  Born in Baltimore, he was the son of the late Frank and Marie Zeberlein O’Connor. He is survived by his wife, Barbara O’Connor and daughters; Micky Procter of Berlin, Trish Bonebrake and her husband, Darrell of Howard County, Md.; Kathy O’Connor and her husband, Steve Osborne of Carroll County, Md. and step-daughter, Mary K. Raley and her husband, Bill of Berlin. There are seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Also surviving are his sisters, Dorothy Gagliano and AnnMarie Patterson. He was preceded in death by a brother, Carroll “Bud” O’Connor and sisters, Patricia Cosner, Agnes Meacher and Marcela Krug.  He leaves numerous nieces and nephews and a host of friends. Osceola, Wis.–Rohn Anderson Engh of Osceola, Wis., 84, passed away on Monday Aug. 4, 2014, at the VA Medical Center in Minneapolis, with his family by his side. He died of a sudden infection causing severe pneumonia and complications. Rohn was born Oct. 13, 1929, in Johnstown, Pa. He was preceded in death by parents, Lynn Anderson Engh and Rosalma Harrigan, affectionately known as “Coolie” and “Muzzie,” and brothers, Denis Anderson and Lynn Michael. Jeri Sullivan Engh, his wife and fellow adventurer for 54 years, survive him; as well as sons, Dan L. of Waukesha, Wis. and James of Grand Rapids, Wis.; sisters, Dona Yates of Iron River, Mich., Mary Joel Davis of Baltimore, brother Fred of Palm Beach, Fla. and 16 nieces and nephews. Reba Mitchell Purnell

Ocean City–Reba Mitchell Purnell, age 100, passed away on Aug. 27, 2014 at her home.   Born in Christopher, Ill., she was the daughter of the late Clarence and Lillie Mitchell. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Thomas Dudley (1959) and second husband, Harry S. Purnell, Jr (1992).   Surviving, are her step-sons, Harry S. Purnell, III and his wife, Barbara of Princeton, N.J., and John “Jack” H. Purnell and his wife, Patricia of Fenwick, Del. and St Louis, MO. She was a beloved grandmother to five grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Reba was a graduate of Illinois State Normal University and taught school for a year in Christopher before becoming a legal secretary in Bloomington, Ill. She and her first husband lived in Beirut, Lebanon and Lima, Peru, where he represented several heavy machinery and automotive companies. Berlin–Marsha E. Davis, age 68, of Berlin, Md. died Tuesday, Aug. 19, 2014 at Atlantic General Hospital in Berlin. She was born in Baltimore and was the daughter of the late Harold and Margaret E. (Johnson) Wier.   She had worked as a legal secretary for the law office of Stacy Harman in Ocean City. She is survived by two daughters: Kendra Sackadorf of Bishopville, Md., and Terri Marley of Ireland, a brother; Robert Wier of Yarmouth Port, MA.  She also has three grandchildren, Noah, Logan and Emily Sackadorf.   A memorial service will be held at a later date. Ocean Pines– Audrey (Dottie) Louise Burgess, age 77, passed away on Sunday, Aug. 24, 2014 at her home. Born in West Virginia, she was the daughter of Ruth Ball Crabtree and Clovis Crabtree. She is survived by her beloved husband of 61 years, Robert B. Burgess, and children; Blair Burgess and his wife, Cynthia, Brian Burgess, Brent Burgess and his wife, Magaly, and Melissa Burgess Palmer and her husband Darrin. There are seven grandchildren, Bonnie, Christopher, Robert, Kelly Rose, Harrison, Maxwell and Julian, and two great-grandchildren, Diego and Sofia. Also surviving is her brother, Tracy Crabtree. She was preceded in death by her sisters, Gaynelle Crabtree and Yvonne Nitz. Dottie will be deeply missed by all who were fortunate enough to know her. Ocean Pines–Grace Elizabeth Vargas Everson, age 82, died on Aug. 29, 2014 at Berlin Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. Born in Washington, D.C., she was the daughter of the late Frank and Dorothy Peters Hazleton. She is survived by her husband, John G. Everson, and four children, Sharon Vargas Elliott and her husband, Dick; Sonia Vargas and her husband, Larry McDaniel; Sandra Vargas Morgenthaler and her husband, Gene; and Steven Vargas and his wife, Ann. She was adored by her three grandchildren and one great-granddaughter. Also surviving is her sister, Gwendolyn H. White of Reston, Va.   “Betty” had a gracious personality and a beautiful sense of style. She was an artist with the Ocean City and Worcester County art leagues.
