Women Supporting Women walk in Pocomoke

(Oct. 27, 2016) About seven years ago Josh Nordstrom of Midway Automotive Group was shopping around for a charity to support and to organize an event around in Pocomoke City.
“We didn’t do stuff like that before I got here. I was at a business after hours when I met the Women Supporting Women team,” he said. “They were so dedicated and passionate, which really shone through during our conversation — things like this come through talking, I find.”
The icing on the cake was the charity is local, run by locals, and all the funds raised stay local.
Finally settling on a format, the seventh annual “Scare Away Breast Cancer” walk is scheduled for Saturday morning. Registration begins at 10 a.m., with the walk beginning at 11 a.m. at Midway Toyota at 1337 Ocean Gateway in Pocomoke City.
An hour later, at noon, a companion “trunk or treat” event for children will take place. Both the walk and the trunk or treat should be finishing up by 3 p.m.
“I like knowing the money I help raise could, one day, go to help my family or friends,” he said. “It makes it a lot easier to help when asked if I could help, especially when you hear of other charities spending 80 or even 90 percent of the money raised on administrative fees. Every dime I help raise is local, and goes toward local efforts.”
Nordstrom, and the surrounding community have raised quite a few dimes. In the past six years, he said, these events have made more than $60,000. For information, call 443-614-6021. Last year, the event raised a little more than $13,300. This year’s goal is $14,000.
“It’s growing every year. As I sit down and total everything up every year, I realize it’s a great thing, and it gives the charity money to go out and do great things,” Nordstrom said. “After the event, my feet might hurt and people are exhausted but we all feel like we accomplished something.”
Nordstrom stressed that this isn’t just a Pocomoke City event.
“We get people from Salisbury, Snow Hill, Ocean City — the whole shore. The whole community comes together and the event gets bigger every year,” he said.
In addition to the walk and trunk or treat features, there will also be a costume contest with prizes for best costume, and best “pink” costume, as well as a silent auction.
Vendors selling a variety of goods will also be on site.
