Town employees grateful to council for continuing effort

(July 21, 2016) Dessert was had before dinner last Monday in Berlin Town Hall, as town staff members presented a cake to the mayor and council at the start of their public meeting.
Town of Berlin employees said it was a gesture of gratitude, and several workers expounded on the theme.
“The things that you’ve done for [town staff] is greatly appreciated. It may seem like small stuff to you, but I can tell you it’s big stuff to these folks,” Managing Director Jeff Fleetwood said. “We greatly appreciate what you’ve done.”
“We appreciate everything you all do for us and everything you give us for doing our jobs correctly. All we can do is thank you a lot and hope you enjoy our cake,” Wastewater Superintendent Jamey Latchum said.
Water Superintendent Marvin Smith, who has been with the town for more than 30 years, said, “this is the smoothest the town has ever run.”
“The council, you always do great things for us and we just want you to know we appreciate you all,” he said. “Just keep doing what you’re doing.”
Mayor Gee Williams said he and the council felt “privileged” by the good work done by town staff, and said the public has taken notice.
“We’re so very fortunate,” he said. “Regardless of what your jobs are, regardless of what you do, regardless of how long you’ve been with the town, I think each and every one of you do your very best to lead by example.”
Councilmember Thom Gulyas said town staff made his job easy.
“You make me very proud of this town,” he said.
“You all really do truly work together as a team … It’s just nice to see a large group of people work so well together and really care about the job and the residents,” Councilmember Lisa Hall said. “People give a lot of compliments on our town staff, and that needs to be passed back to you.”
Councilmember Elroy Brittingham said he regularly received calls that Berlin workers had promptly addressed complaints from the public.
“I thank everybody for pitching together and really doing their jobs,” he said. “It makes our job very easy.”
Councilmember Dean Burrell said those in public service needed to keep perspective that their jobs were not about them, but rather who they represent.
“We represent the people, the citizens of Berlin, Maryland. And it is on their behalf, whatever we do,” he said. “And I can sit here and say it is my opinion that the citizens of Berlin hold you – the staff, the workers, the ones that provide them the service – in the highest regard. It should not be you providing a cake for us – we should be providing a cake for you.”
“Can we eat cake?” Hall asked.
