Quarter auction for Great Pocomoke Fair starts Friday

(May 5, 2016) To raise money and ensure another year of the Great Pocomoke Fair, scheduled this year between Aug. 4-6 off Broad Street in Pocomoke City, event organizers are expected to host a quarter auction tomorrow from 7 -11 p.m. at the fairgrounds.
This is the third fundraising event so far this year. The first was a Bingo tournament on April 1 and more recently, on April 16, was Mud Madness, where cars, trucks and Jeeps navigated an obstacle course and mud bog.
“It’s one of two fundraisers left. The fair is kept afloat by these different events, and all the money goes to help run the fair,” organizer Judy Hinman said.
Though the fair will be represented at the June 11 Relay for Life, those events have a different focus. The second fair event is the league-sanctioned June 25 Lucas Oil Pro-Pulling League Truck and Tractor Pull, starting at 6:30 p.m. at the fairgrounds.
“For the Quarter Auction, you pay $10 for the first paddle, additional paddles are $5 each or three for $10,” Hinman said.
The paddles are numbered, and bids are incremented by quarters for every $25 worth of value. A $50 item will cost 50 cents to bid, for example. Participants place bids on items and a winner is drawn.
“You can win with your spare change,” organizer Gloria Smith said. “We have fan packs of Shorebirds tickets, gift certificates for the Fairfield Inn on Chincoteague, Dairy Queen gift cards and a Tangier Island cruise gift certificate,” Smith said. Other prizes will also be available, but may have opening bid amounts larger than a quarter.
“We’re looking to give you enough for your money — we don’t want anyone to feel like they haven’t done anything with their money,” Hinman said.
The fair will put those funds to use.
“This event is a fundraiser to offset expenses of the fair such as ribbons, trophies, prizes and premiums. We get some funding from the Maryland Agricultural Fair Board, but we have about 70 exhibitors and about 800 exhibits each year and pay out around $6,000 in premiums,” Smith said. “This event will help pay the difference.”
The Great Pocomoke Fair is an open fair, Smith said. It accepts exhibits from 4-H and non-4-H youth as well as adults living in Accomack, Wicomico, Worcester, Somerset and Sussex counties.
