May Day Play Day kicks off busy Berlin events season

(May 18, 2017) A crowd of thousands is expected in downtown Berlin Friday night for the seventh annual May Day Play Day festival, hosted by Radio Ocean 98.
The headlining act this year is Jocelyn and Chris Arndt, a Cambridge, Massachusetts group described as a cross between Grace Potter and Led Zeppelin. The band’s latest album, “Go,” was released on May 5.
The Rogue Citizens, a four-piece rock and reggae band from Ocean City, will also perform.
Berlin Economic and Community Development Director Ivy Wells said only two bands were booked “to allow for them to play longer.” Four bands performed in 2016.
“It’s kind of the first kickoff, nighttime event for the season,” Wells said of May Day Play Day. “It’s a chance to come out and have a great time and listen to some music under the stars.”
She said event planners worked with the Berlin Arts & Entertainment Committee to recruit more artist vendors this year. Several tables will be set up on Jefferson Street, near Main Street, in a fashion similar to the Maker’s Market that runs during 2nd Friday art strolls from May through December.
Burley Oak Brewing Company and the Atlantic Hotel will operate beer gardens. Wells said restaurants would offer food to go and picnic tables would be set up in the downtown area.
No outside alcohol is permitted during the event.
Ocean 98’s newest member, Stevie Jay, will host rounds of Bingo between bands. Prizes will include tickets to the NASCAR Cup race in Dover on June 4 and a 43-inch TV from Rent-A-Center in Berlin.
Additionally, Worcester County Robotics Team Titanium Wrecks will offer a demonstration during the event.
Admission is free and May Day Play Day is scheduled to run from 5-9 p.m., downtown.
