May Day Play Day features music, games, beer garden

(May 7, 2015) Four bands, one beer garden and a handful of carnival games geared toward families highlight this year’s May Day Play Day in Berlin on Friday.
This year’s event, the fifth annual, also coincides with the town’s 2nd Friday art stroll, and will feature a live radio broadcast from host Ocean 98.
“That’s how it started,” organizer Brendan Kashuba (“DJ BK”), said. “We started it on year one as a Friday event. Last year we did a Saturday afternoon event and the town and the radio station and everyone agreed to go back to the Friday night this year.”
Part of the decision, Kashuba said, was made because the town saw a bigger potential boost to the local economy on Friday evening.
“The town has a very unique relationship with the radio station, and the radio station likes to support the people who support us,” Kashuba said. “Really, the whole idea behind it is to deliver a free family-friendly and fun event for the town and the community.”
Live music on the Main Street stage begins at 5 p.m. with Baltimore’s Bond & Bentley. Brother’s Keeper, from Vail, Col. follows at 6:15 p.m., with Nashville-based Stone Senate taking the stage at 7:30 p.m. and Quincy Mumford & The Reason Why, from Asbury Park, N.J. closing the evening out at 8:45 p.m.
Kashuba said the bands were hand picked by the radio station.
“The bands that are playing are all featured on our radio station,” he said. “All four of them are touring the country and are playing on radio stations across the country, and just like we like to give back to the town and the community, the bands also recognize that and they like to give back to the radio station. They’re more than willing – and excited – about coming and playing for the Berlin crowd.
“With the success of the event, the enthusiasm from the bands is overwhelming,” Kashuba added. “I had 25-30 acts that wanted to play, but you can only do so much.”
Burley Oak Brewing Co. will provide a beer garden on Main Street near the Atlantic Hotel, and vendors and games will be set up along Main Street in the downtown area.
Sponsors include Courtesy Chevy Cadillac from Salisbury, Midway Toyota from Pocomoke, Paws and Claws from Ocean City, and the Bank of Ocean City.
“We want people to enjoy this the same way they enjoy all the events the town is already putting on,” Kashuba said. “The town has established a really good reputation for hosting a series of really fun events, and if this one is another one of those that people take away that same experience and say, man, this is just as fun as that New Year’s Eve or their Oktoberfest or their Spring Celebration or whatever it is, then I think we’ve done our job.”
