(May 25, 2017) The Ocean Pines Pickleball Club is partnering with the Ocean Pines Association to host a grand opening ceremony for the community’s eight new outdoor pickleball courts on Saturday, May 27 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Manklin Meadows Racquet Sports Complex, at 11443 Manklin Creek Road.
Club members will conduct free clinics for beginner pickleball players that day from 10 a.m. to noon; open play will also be available during this time. To register for the clinic, contact John Hanberry at jhanberry@comcast.net or 703-598-6119.
A dedication and ribbon-cutting ceremony will begin at noon, followed by music, drinks and light refreshments. In case of inclement weather, the event will be held on Sunday, May 28.
In conjunction with the grand opening, a free week of pickleball at the new courts will be offered to the public from May 27 – June 2.
The Ocean Pines Association’s Board-approved pickleball project converted two existing tennis courts to accommodate the eight new permanent pickleball courts. The project scope included extending, squaring and filing corners of the asphalt pads as well as extending the chain link fence, painting and installing nets and posts.
Pickleball is a family-friendly racquet sport that combines elements of tennis, badminton and ping-pong. Two-to-four players use a Wiffle ball and composite paddles on a surface half the size of a tennis court with a lower net. It is accessible to experienced and nonexperienced players alike.
Ocean Pines offers yearly pickleball memberships for families, individuals and juniors. Members have access to indoor courts, at the Ocean Pines Community Center, and the outdoor courts at Manklin Meadows. Memberships are available to Ocean Pines residents and to nonresidents, for an additional fee.
