(May 21, 2015) The sewer line construction project begun in Berlin on May 11 is expected to last several more weeks.
Crews started working on the lines last week, partially closing traffic on Main Street between Route 346 and Route 50.
“It took the contractor a little bit longer to mobilize the equipment then he originally intended or told us,” Town Administrator Laura Allen said on Monday. “He needed to get a certified well driller, and apparently there’s a lot of construction in the area, so it took him some time to get the equipment as well as the [worker].”
Allen said the contractor, David A. Bramble Inc., had to begin by “de-watering” the area, causing noticeable spillage in the parking lot of Cheers on Old Ocean City Boulevard.
“That’s completely normal,” Allen said. “We did have a phone call from [Cheers Owner] Mr. Denny. There was some mud that was moving in a direction it shouldn’t have. We went and took care of that last week.”
Allen added that an official from water resources was checking on project at least once each day. The town also hired an engineering firm to oversee construction.
Despite the slight delay, Allen said the project has not gone over budget and estimated the work should be completed during the next several weeks.
“It’s hard to predict the time because, until they get in there and see what they’re got to deal with, the amount of time might vary a little bit,” Allen said. “Plus the amount of work they’re able to do might depend on the weather.”
Crews are not working during the weekends and will break from Friday through Monday in observance of Memorial Day.
The roadway is not open to through traffic, although Aallen said residents in the area, as well as clients of the medical facilities affected by the project, “should be able to get in and out without any trouble.”
