Berlin council approves final measures for Cannery Village

(March 26, 2015) Cannery Village, an affordable housing complex in Berlin, continues to move in the right procedural direction following a mayor and council meeting on Monday, March 23.
The council approved a public works agreement, stormwater agreement and stormwater construction agreement for the project.
Located on Cannery Way at Flower Street, the development has been in the works for more than a decade.
The neighborhood will include 36 four-bedroom rancher style homes, eight two-bedroom duplexes and one community center. Two bedroom homes will rent for $400-$750 and four bedroom homes rent for $500-$850 per month.
Residents also will have the option to buy a property following a 15-year lease period.
Andrew Hanson, a developer at Osprey Property Company, said he originally presented the project to the council in August 2013.
“Since then, we were awarded funding [from the Maryland Department of Housing and Community Development] and worked with the town and other folks to secure funding,” he said.
The town agreed to give Cannery a property tax break, over a 40-year period, as long as it continues the rent-to-own program.
Planning Director Dave Engelhart said all that’s left is for the developer to pay for permits, likely next week, and begin construction.
“We appreciate working with the town,” Hanson said. “We’re excited to hopefully get started in the very, very near future.”
