Berlin adopts public spaces naming and renaming policy

(May 11, 2017) The Berlin Town Council unanimously adopted a naming and renaming policy for town property on Monday.
The policy was developed over several months by the Berlin Naming Parks and Public Spaces Committee, which was formed in January.
Town Councilman and committee Chairman Zack Tyndall said the group worked well together, drafting a three-page policy based on a similar document used by a town in Florida.
The policy applies to town structures and real property including open spaces, parks and memorials. Not included are government offices or maintenance and utility buildings, historically registered properties, public art installations that “have been commissioned with a title,” town, county, state or federal roads and highways, and private property.
Individuals or organizations can request names for existing items by submitting a written request to the town administrator. The policy says the mayor and council “may direct the town administrator to publicly solicit ideas for naming new items.”
A public hearing must be held to receive comments “on all naming or renaming requests,” the policy states.
Committee member Mike Wiley said the group was the most efficient he has ever worked on. Committee member Carol Rose thanked Town Administrator Laura Allen and Town Attorney David Gaskill for their assistance.
“You made it very easy to work,” she said.
Tyndall made the formal motion to approve the policy.
“Congratulations,” Mayor Gee Williams said. “You all did a great job.”
