Berlin Council Briefs

(July 13, 2017) The Berlin Mayor and Council discussed the following items during a public meeting at Town Hall on Monday:
Special events
The council unanimously supported two events: the Heroes Never Forget 5K on Sept. 10 and National Night Out on Aug. 1.
Heroes Never Forget is a new event, sponsored by and benefiting the Berlin Fire Company. OC Tri-Running will help organize it.
National Night Out is an annual program organized locally by the Berlin Police Department. It will be held at Dr. William Henry Park from 4-7 p.m. and will include at least eight other local organizations and nonprofits, according to Police Chief Arnold Downing.
Code changes
Two ordinances related to town parks were adopted unanimously.
Administrative Services Director Mary Bohlen said the items were essentially bringing the code up to date. The changes clarified the role of the parks commission, gave the Town Council leeway on approving events that include alcohol in the parks, and allow bicycles inside the parks.
Berlin Parks Commission Chairman Mike Wiley said the commission reviewed and approved of the changes.
A first reading on the changes was held during the previous council meeting.
Field trip
Downing said police and other volunteers were preparing to take their largest group of children yet from Worcester Youth and Family Counseling Services programs to Jolly Roger this month. He said Robin Tomaselli from Baked Desserts will be making snacks and the Main Street Deli will be providing lunch at a reduced cost.
In August, Downing said police were planning a trip with Worcester Youth children to the Stratosphere trampoline park in Delmar.
Fireworks successful
Downing said police and other officials received only positive comments about the town fireworks display on July 3. He said First Baptist Church had more than 300 people watching there and others viewed the display from as far away as the Tractor Supply Co., Berlin Nursing & Rehabilitation Center and Berlin Intermediate School.
Townwide, viewership was estimated in the thousands.
Economic and Community Development Director Ivy Wells said she asked for the fireworks to be “super high in the sky,” which helped attract the larger crowd. She said a Facebook Live feed reached nearly 13,000 people.
Billboard
The council unanimously approved a requisition order for $18,000 for one year of billboard rental, extending the lease of the town billboard near Fort Whaley on Route 50.
