Berlin Briefs

(May 25, 2017) The Berlin Mayor and Council discussed the following items during a meeting at Town Hall on Monday.
Oceans East
The council unanimously approved three EDUs for the new Ocean East apartment complex on Seahawk Road. The EDUs were part of an earlier agreement and would be allocated for a community center there.
Mayor Gee Williams said EDUs had already been approved and paid for, for the first building in the development.
Fence finished
Water Resources/Public Works Director Jane Kreiter said the town had finished installing a fourth side to the fence around the offland wetlands on Flower Street, behind the multipurpose building. Several councilmen expressed concerns about the wetlands only being partially enclosed during previous meetings.
Construction/demolition
Planning Director Dave Engelhart said the building on 21 Jefferson Street had been demolished. Habitat for Humanity purchased the property with plans to redevelop it into a mixed-use building with artist studios on the ground floor and apartments overhead. A fundraiser for Habitat at the site is planned for June 23.
Engelhart said town officials had a preconstruction meeting with the contractor for the new Berlin library. He said a groundbreaking is scheduled there for June 6 at 1:30 p.m.
A groundbreaking for the new Atlantic General Hospital Cancer Center is scheduled for the following day, June 7, at 2 p.m. Engelhart said a permit for that building was issued last Wednesday.
