Beach Bots team gets recognition at council meeting

BERLIN—The Worcester County Beach Bots Robotics Team was recognized by Mayor Gee Williams and the Town Council on March 24 for their achievements in designing and building award-winning robots.
The 60-member team was presented with a $400 check by Chief Arnold Downing from the Berlin Police Department to help support the team by contributing some of the funds that will hopefully allow the team to attend a global competition in St. Louis from April 23-26.
During a special presentation, Michele Kosin, a physics teacher at Snow Hill High School and robotics coach, described for the town council the team’s activities. She took the opportunity to thank the team’s many local sponsors, including Atlantic Orthopaedics, P.A., Home Depot, Victorian Charm, and several other town businesses, she said.
Team captains Danny Beck and Gary Qian informed the town officials in order to compete in the global robotics competition the team will have to raise $20,000, and is seeking additional sponsors.
The team competed against 56 teams from six states and one team from the Netherlands to win the North Carolina Regional FIRST Robotics Competition. The acronym FIRST stands for “For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology.” With their regional win, the team has now qualified to compete in the FIRST Robotics Competition World Championship, which will be held at the Edward Jones Dome in St. Louis.
The team is comprised of students from Stephen Decatur Middle School, and Stephen Decatur and Snow Hill high schools and includes: Teri Adelhardt, Danny Beck, Daniel Black, Chris Brown, Zach Brown, Hyun Soo Chun, Ashley Crosby, Ashley Dear, Owen Dennis, Jacob Eisenman, Connor Forte, Sohaib Ijaz, Lindsay Kremer, David Mitchell, Kevin O’Connor, Tripp Ortega, Deep Patel, Jackson Pielstick, Gabriel Power, Gary Qian, Jerry Qian, Kristofer Rorke,

St. Paul United Methodist Church at 405 Flower Street will host its Second Annual 5k Memorial Walk on Saturday, April 12, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The walk, which will also include runners, is in part a walking tour of the historically African-American neighborhood and a fitness-friendly way for neighbors, relatives and friends to reconnect with the community with remembrances of departed loved-ones.
The Berlin Electric Police, Public Works, Stormwater, Water, Wastewater, departments and utilities are collaborating to organize “Touch a Truck Day,” also known as “Public Works/Utility Day,” which is scheduled for Saturday, May 31, at Stephen Decatur Park, according to Electric Utility Director Tim Lawrence.
Lawrence described the event as an opportunity to expose young people to careers in utility fields through demonstrations and hands-on experiences. The full day of events are still being organized, he said, but some of the activities will include a demonstration of how a Digger Derrick is used to set electric poles in place and will include opportunities for young pole to operate the truck in tandem with a certified operator; a pole-top rescue where a department employee will show how to rescue and resuscitate a “victim” from atop an electric pole; locating underground cables; and a transformer demonstration that will be conducted ground level.
The council approved two proclamations, Proclamation 2014-06, to recognize April as “Fair Housing Month,” and Proclamation 2014-07, to recognize the week of April 19-26 as the town’s third annual observance of “Take Pride in Berlin Week.”
