Food and drink shops get into the holiday spirit

BERLIN/OCEAN PINES — As chilly, winter-like weather has hit the area, several local businesses are preparing specialty foods and drinks for families eager to get into the holiday mood.

Many good eateries are in the area and most have space to sit down while also offering a take-out service.

Si’culi on North Main Street in Berlin always has a rotating daily special and winter-related entrees will be served all winter.

Main Street Deli on South Main Street in Berlin will create combination meat and cheese trays, featuring items from national distributor Dietz & Watson. Any sort of meats and cheeses can be incorporated, and varieties offered include roast beef, pastrami, New York sharp cheddar cheese and American cheese.

Several pies can also be purchased, such as sweet potato pie, apple pie, apple crump and pumpkin pie.

In December, Enchanted Tea Room on South Main Street in Berlin will serve Victorian-era desserts: plum pudding made with a combination of five separate recipes and a variety of fruits, including sugar plum candies and sugar-coated dried fruit.

The Berlin Coffee House on Jefferson Street in Berlin will have its usual hot coffees and teas, but also a few new items for the season. A new autumn spice coffee is on the menu, made with pumpkin spice and a few extra flavors, and several homemade chocolates are on the shelves, including chocolate-covered coffee beans.

Cupcakes in Bloom on North Main Street in Berlin always changes its selection to reflect the holiday season. Some in-house made edibles include eggnog gingerbread cupcakes and peppermint brownies.

Yummy! Sweet Shop off Nicholas Lane in Ocean Pines also serves plenty of treats designed for the holiday, including gingerbread snowflake cookies and snowmen cake pops.

Main Street Sweets on North Main Street in Berlin has just got in a variety of holiday gift boxes filled with chocolates. There are Christmas boxes featuring icons such as The Nutcracker and Santa, as well as Hanukkah boxes displaying a menorah and Star of David.

Mr. and Mrs. Santa cupcakes will also be served this season.

Baked Dessert Cafe on Bay Street in Berlin will bake fresh cakes, pies or more for anyone who wishes to have a freshly made dessert at home, but does not have the time to bake.

Cakes include pumpkin cheesecake and peppermint patty cake, while pies are blueberry, apple pecan caramel and peach.

The shop also features wines made by organic wineries and vineyards. Snoqualmie Whistle Stop Red merlot from Washington and Simi Chardonnay from California are among the many recommended wines.

On the subject of wine, Maryland Wine Bar on North Main Street in Berlin is stocked with wines that have solely been created in Maryland. Some quality beverages include Great Shoals’ spiced hard cider from Mount Vernon, along with the winery’s apple sparkling champagne-style wine meant to be served as a dessert wine. The bar will also soon serve peppermint bark and other holiday chocolates from resident Denise Tolson.

Sisters on North Main Street has several Maryland wines in stock, including Laytons Chance from Vienna, Bordeleau from Eden, and Costa Ventosa from Whaleyville. Wines can be taken home or consumed at the shop’s bar located in the back.

The Noble Grape off Cathell Road in Ocean Pines recommends Root: 1 cabernet sauvignon from Chile and a combination of pinot noir, cabernet and sauvignon made by The Naked Grape in California.

Southside Deli Beer & Wine off Nicholas Lane in Ocean Pines has several different wines depending on the occasion. The Dreaming Tree from California, a collaboration between musician Dave Matthews and wine maker Steve Reeder, has many different flavors such as cabernet sauvignon.

For the calorie-conscious individuals, California red wine from Skinnygirl is only 100 calories per serving.

Burley Oak Brewery on Old Ocean City Boulevard in Berlin will soon serve a few new beers that incorporate a holiday twist.

Soon to be featured on tap are English Mild, a traditional English brew that has an alcohol content of only 4 percent, and SuperFun Stout, an oatmeal stout that has been made for two years now in collaboration with SuperFun Eco Tours.

Also, a limited five-gallon barrel of two new beers will be served only one day, each on the next two Thursdays. First, will be a variety of Just the Tip that also includes cranberries and cinnamon, and next will be a thin mint porter.

These beers can be taken home as well, as growlers are sold to be filled with any beer currently available on tap.

These are just a few of the numerous food and drink opportunities around the area, as there are many restaurants, bakeries, breweries and more open throughout the winter with plenty of items that are sure to satisfy anyone who wishes to indulge on some holiday flavor.
