Sisters guest bartending event begins September

BERLIN — Starting Friday, Sept. 7, Sisters on North Main Street will invite members of nonprofit organizations once a month to be guest bartenders to raise money for their charities.
“This was our idea of giving back to the community,” said Donna Compher, who co-owns Sisters with her — what else— sister, Michael Ann Phillips.
Every first Friday of the month, the guest bartenders from a different organization will serve beer and wine from 7-9 p.m. There will also be appetizers made by the owners.
“This is exactly why we got a bigger store,” Compher said. She said it has always been their wish to organize large-scale events.
This month’s guest bartenders will be Berlin Mayor Gee Williams and Michael Day, economic and community development director of Berlin, who represent Main Street Berlin.
“It’s going to be a fun and easy night,” Day said. “I’d like to see it succeed and we’ll help promote it.”
Main Street Berlin is a volunteer organization consisting of Berlin officials, business owners, operators and workers who want to continue the revitalization of downtown Berlin.
Day said the funds from the guest bartending event will support Berlin Victorian Christmas, the organization’s biggest event.
Held throughout the winter months, Berlin Victorian Christmas consists of numerous holiday-oriented events.
In recognition of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October, the sisters are looking for a related organization for that month’s event.
Since their mother, Sue Marine, lost her battle with lung cancer in 2006, the two have been devoted to supporting as many cancer organizations they can.
In November, the event will support the sisters’ Relay for Life team in honor of the anniversary of their mother’s death.
Relay for Life is a national nonprofit program supported by the American Cancer Society.
Besides the first three scheduled months, Sisters does not have any other organizations set for any other month. No event will be scheduled for January, but the monthly event will continue into 2013 and onward.
They are discussing the possibility of organizing the event on every third Friday as well, but nothing is set in stone.
